Climate risk is assessed using a variety of metrics measuring greenhouse gas emissions. This is because the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that, to limit global warming to 1.5oC above pre-industrial levels, the world’s carbon emissions need to halve by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. Changing course to limit global warming to 1.5oC, with no or limited overshoot, will require drastic greenhouse gas emissions reductions in the near-term. The Task Force on Climate-related Disclosures (TCFD) is a global initiative that seeks to increase transparency in the reporting of financial information regarding climate. The TCFD reporting framework helps investors, insurers and other market players evaluate and manage the risks and opportunities faced by organisations in relation to climate change.
