With roots dating back to 1742, Rathbones has been a provider of financial services since 1912, when the business was restructured to focus solely on wealth management.
The company listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1992, the year of its 250th anniversary. In that same year, we pioneered one of the UK’s first tailored ethical and sustainable portfolio services, which led in 2004 to the formal establishment of Rathbone Greenbank Investments. In 2009, Rathbones became one of the first investment managers to sign up to the UN-endorsed Principles for Responsible Investment, which promotes environmental, social and governance considerations.
In 2018 we acquired Speirs and Jeffrey, Scotland’s largest independent wealth manager, followed by the financial planning business Saunderson House in 2021. In 2023 we announced our intention to combine with Investec Wealth & Investment UK (IW&I) to create the UK’s leading discretionary wealth manager.
Today we are proud to operate out of 23 locations across the UK and Jersey, with £100.7bn* of assets under management for our clients (locations and AUM figure inclusive of IW&I).
A breakdown of this figure is below:
– £45.4 billion in the Investment Management business
– £12.5 billion in the Rathbones Asset Management business
– £2.0 billion in Saunderson House
– £40.8 billion in Investec W&I
With headquarters in London, we maintain a large office in Liverpool, the place where Rathbones was originally founded and which continues to be an important centre for us today.
As we approach our 300th anniversary, Rathbones continues to grow and move forward with confidence, while ensuring that we continue to place clients’ interests at the centre of everything we do.
The Rathbone family motto of “gently in manner, firmly in action” has been a guiding principle for the firm throughout our history and continues to inspire us today in our position as the UK’s leading provider of discretionary wealth management.
